Whether you have tile flooring in your home or office, you can learn how to tile over existing tiles to make them look new again. You may also consider using epoxy grout, which will give your tiles a wainscot look.
Creating a wainscot look
Creating a wainscot look over existing tiles can be a challenging undertaking. Fortunately, there are several ways to tackle the task, from ripping up the tiles to installing a faux wainscot.
The most obvious method involves removing the existing tile in sections. You will need a stud finder to help you identify the studs beneath. Once you have a good idea of where your studs are, it’s time to install the wainscoting. To install the wainscot, follow the manufacturer’s directions for installing the product. You can either nail the pieces into place or use wall stud markers.
One of the more advanced methods is to draw a divider line around the perimeter of the room. This line should be no more than about 1 1/2″ to 2″ off of the wall. Next, you will need to adjust the size of the dividing line to create the most appropriate size for your wainscot. If you are lucky, you will have a wainscot that is about as high as your ceiling.
For the best results, you will need to make sure that the wainscot is properly primed before you begin the installation. If you are going to leave the tile in place, you will need to sand the surface to allow the adhesive to bond to the tile. You will also want to use safety glasses when sanding.
Using an epoxy grout
Using epoxy grout to tile over existing tiles is a great way to enhance the aesthetic of your home. It is also waterproof, stain-resistant, and durable. This type of grout is perfect for kitchens, bathrooms, splashbacks, and commercial applications.
Epoxy grout is made up of two parts – the liquid hardener and a filler powder compound. These two parts must be mixed properly according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Then, the epoxy grout float must be forced into all the tile joints.
The float must be pressed into the tile at a 45-degree angle to ensure that the grout is evenly distributed. This should happen within 45 minutes. It is not recommended to wait longer than this to allow the epoxy to cure.
Once the epoxy has cured, silicone can be applied to the joints. Once the tiles have been grouted, a second packet of the cleaning additive can be used one hour after the initial wash.
If the grout has become hazy, it can be cleaned with vinegar and water. It is also safe to use a steam wand cleaner on epoxy grouting. Alternatively, a damp sponge can be used.
It is important to clean the grout thoroughly to prevent the build-up of grime. The edges of the tile should be scrubbed in a light circular motion to loosen any residue.
